I am still on tour with the Austin Eurythmy Ensemble. We performed at the Harold Washington Library in Chicago and the Lydia Mendelssohn Theater on the University of Michigan Campus in Ann Arbor. This has been a light tour for us with not as many performances, but it will be busy tomorrow the 23rd. We will have three performances at Concordia College in Minneapolis and end the tour. The tour has gone well but it continues to be difficult to attract audiences and meet expenses. Arts are not a priority in the present cultural climate. But we must continue to make them available, to try to reach out and keep the arts alive. It is the only way to ensure an artistic future, and perhaps, any future at all.

Sunday I leave with the Austin Eurythmy Ensemble on a 10 day tour of Chicago, Ann Arbor, and Minneapolis. It will be a new kind of tour for us, with not as many venues, more time, and in better theatres. It should be interesting, and will include The Fazil Say Sonata for piano and violin, the Arvo Paert Fratres, and some Ginastera piano works.
In addition, I am taking the video camera and hope to get some interesting footage. I was busy tonight improvising for the film I hope to enter into a couple festivals, “Voitures de Fantôme (Ghost Cars)”. You can watch it on this blog. I am interested in what people think of it. So far it has not only been infectious and very enjoyable for me to work on these films, it has taught me a great deal about the people I know and perceptions. Everyone who sees these films brings something different to the experience, in a way more tangible than music. Past experiences, the visual, the music, everyone relates to something different. This has been an unexpected and enjoyable benefit of making these shorts. Nancy Schiesari, a good friend who is an impressive film maker, has been a wonderful resource and very supportive.
I may post on the road but it all depends on the wireless.
I am back the 25th and then off to Tokyo the 30th for a week…to REALLY film and have a paradigm shift.
Cheers

Watch the video
This film deals with memory, reality, perception, and flashback imagery. It features footage from Paris, Lugano, and the Swiss countryside. It begins with the Chopin “Revolutionary Etude” for piano and shifts to scenes with the Claude Debussy museum and his prelude “Broulliards”, or mists. It shows how grey and opaque Europe can be in the middle of March.

Watch the video
This is the final version of the video in Motion in Red. It is best watched with Quicktime.
It has more layers and overlap and I think better reflects the underlying improvisation. It develops from the middle of the day to twilight, sunset, and night. There is an additive effect of light, color, and the pitches and textures in the piano improvisation.

Watch the video
This is a composition of different film clips of motion in Austin, Texas and my own piano improvisation. I am experimenting with overlap and using video as a “musical” medium. The film develops from juxtaposed block scenes to more complicated overlays and mosaics. For smooth motion this film is best watched in Quicktime. This was shot with a 3CCD Panasonic EZ-50 and editied with Final Cut Pro 4.5.

This improvisation was one step taken toward the completion of Motion in Red. This is the raw piano playing without the video.
